A marble-topped cooking island does double duty as an informal sitting area. The custom buffet pass-through to the dining room replaces a wall, providing additional storage, making the kitchen brighter, and opening it up to a view of Green Lake through a picture window (part of which can be seen to the right).

What the client asked for

Make kitchen larger and brighter.

Make kitchen more of a destination, and less of a hallway.

Expand work and storage space.

Add a sitting nook.

Solutions

Expanded kitchen outward to take up what used to be a porch, adding windows and creating space for a sitting nook with a view of Green Lake.

Moved exterior entrance so circulation would not interfere with work areas. Created transition area with coat rack (mini mud room).

Opened up wall between kitchen and dining room with custom pass-through buffet, making the kitchen brighter and more spacious.

Added cooking island with drop-down ventilation hood to increase work space and create an informal gathering area.

Added built-in kitchen desk in transition area to central hallway and dining room.

Carefully placed all elements to fit harmoniously an amount of work and storage space normally found in much larger kitchens.

After: Expanded work area with a large country-kitchen sink, teak counter tops, and a cooking island topped with Carrera marble. In the back is the new entrance from the backyard, with a transition area (mini mud room) and coat rack. To its right is a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a kitchen desk.
